UK benefits system 2025/26

The UK benefits system provides financial support to people who are on a low income, out of work, disabled, caring for others, or dealing with other life circumstances. Benefits fall into two main categories:

Means-tested benefits

These are based on your income and savings. The main means-tested benefit is Universal Credit, which has replaced most legacy benefits for working-age people. Others include Council Tax Reduction and Pension Credit for those over State Pension age.

Contributory benefits

These are based on your National Insurance record rather than your income. They include New Style Jobseeker's Allowance, New Style Employment and Support Allowance, and the State Pension.

Non-means-tested benefits

These are paid regardless of income. They include Child Benefit (though the High Income Child Benefit Tax Charge applies above £60,000 income), Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Carer's Allowance.

Benefit cap

There is a total benefit cap — a limit on the total amount of benefit a household can receive. The cap in 2025/26 is £442.31 per week for families (£22,020 per year) in London and £367.33 per week (£19,101 per year) outside London.
